How to Care for Cotton Blankets — Washing, Drying, and Tips for Longevity

Caring for your cotton blanket is essentially as simple as machine washing it. No special effort is required. We've compiled tips on how to wash, dry, and perform daily care to help you enjoy your blanket comfortably for a long time.

Cotton blankets can be machine washed

"Do blankets need to be dry-cleaned?"
You might think so, but 100% cotton blankets can generally be washed in a household washing machine.

Unlike delicate materials like wool or cashmere, cotton doesn't require special handling, which is one of its great advantages. For something used daily, ease of care is very important.

Washing Tips

Since it's used daily in the living room, it's reassuring that it can be washed in a household washing machine (Half Tone Face Throw Blanket)

Use a laundry net

When washing a blanket, it is recommended to put it in a large laundry net.
This prevents pilling due to friction and tangling with other garments.

Use a delicate cycle or hand-wash setting

Choosing the "delicate," "hand wash," or "gentle" cycle on your washing machine reduces stress on the fabric.
While a normal cycle can be used, a gentler setting is recommended for longer use.

Use a neutral detergent

Using a neutral detergent for delicate items helps prevent damage to the fibers and maintains the fabric's texture.
It's best to avoid bleach as it can damage the fabric.

Drying Tips

Dry in the shade, if possible

Cotton can become stiff if exposed to direct sunlight for a long time.
It's best to dry it in a well-ventilated, shaded area.

Spread it out to dry

If you fold it in half over a clothesline, the overlapped parts will take longer to dry.
If possible, spread it out so air can circulate, and it will dry faster and come out fluffier.

Hanging it in an M-shape (using two poles and letting the middle of the blanket sag) creates an air passage, allowing it to dry more efficiently.

When using a dryer

If using a dryer, a low-heat setting for a short period is recommended.
High heat for extended periods can cause shrinkage.

Daily Care

After use, instead of folding it up, spread it out on the bed to prevent moisture buildup (Pixel Throw Blanket)

Spread it out after use

Storing it folded can lead to moisture buildup.
After use, simply drape it over the back of a sofa or spread it on a chair to allow air circulation. That's all it takes.

This alone will naturally reduce the frequency of washing.

If pilling occurs

Cotton may develop some lint or pills with use.
This is a characteristic of natural fibers and does not indicate a quality issue.

If bothered by pills, gently remove them with a fabric shaver to restore its neat appearance.
Just be careful not to pull too hard, as this can damage the fabric.

When storing

If storing for the off-season, wash and thoroughly dry it first.
It's best to wrap it in a breathable bag or cloth and store it in a dry place.

Avoid sealing it in plastic bags, as moisture can easily accumulate.

Gets softer with each wash

With each wash, it becomes softer and blends into the room's scenery (Ivory Flow Throw Blanket)

100% cotton blankets gradually change in texture with each wash.
While new, they have a firm feel, but with continued use, they become softer and more comfortable against the skin.

This isn't deterioration; it's the process of it becoming uniquely yours.

iMPeRF's art blankets are 100% cotton jacquard woven.
Since the design is woven into the fabric, the pattern is less likely to fade even after washing.

All 29 designs are reversible and machine washable.
Use them freely, wash them easily. They are designed to be a long-lasting companion in your daily life.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q. Will it fade or transfer color when washed?
A. Jacquard weaving dyes the threads before weaving, so it is less prone to fading compared to printed fabrics. However, for the first wash, it's safer to wash it separately as a precaution.

Q. How often should I wash it?
A. Approximately once a month is a good guideline, even with daily use. In warmer seasons when you sweat more, you might wash it every 2-3 weeks. Overwashing can, however, be hard on the fabric.

Q. Is ironing necessary?
A. Generally, no. If you reshape it after washing and let it air dry, wrinkles will naturally smooth out. If you're concerned, use a pressing cloth and iron on a medium to low setting.

Q. Will it shrink when washed?
A. Cotton has a property of shrinking slightly when it absorbs water. However, if high temperatures are avoided, significant shrinkage is rare. Wash with cold or lukewarm water instead of hot water, and avoid high heat in the dryer. Adhering to these two points will help maintain its size. Gently pulling it into shape after washing will help restore its original texture.

Q. What washing machine cycle and capacity should I choose?
A. Choose either the "hand wash," "delicate," or "gentle" cycle. For capacity, ensure there's enough room for the blanket to "swim" in the washing machine. Overloading will prevent it from getting clean and may leave crease marks. For an M size (approx. 130x160cm), a 5kg or larger machine is comfortable, and for an L size (approx. 160x200cm), a 7kg or larger machine is ideal.
