What is Jacquard Weaving? The world of art expressed through weaving

Jacquard weaving is a technique that creates complex patterns by controlling each warp and weft thread individually. Invented in 18th century France, it is a form of artistic expression through weaving that continues to be used in the textile world today.

The idea of painting with weaves

There are several ways to apply patterns to fabric.
The most common is "printing," a method of printing patterns with ink on finished fabric.

Jacquard weaving takes a completely different approach.
It creates designs by combining threads themselves. This means the pattern becomes part of the fabric—"built into the structure from the beginning" rather than "applied later."

Therefore, you can feel the texture of the pattern with your fingers.
It has a unique three-dimensional quality and texture that printing does not.

How Jacquard Weaving Works

In regular weaving, warp and weft threads cross regularly to create a flat fabric.

In Jacquard weaving, the appearance of the threads is controlled by individually raising and lowering each warp thread. By finely changing the color and position of the threads that appear on the surface, complex patterns like paintings can be woven.

In 1804, French inventor Joseph Marie Jacquard developed a system to control looms with punch cards. This is the origin of the name "Jacquard weaving." While it was a symbol of luxury goods at the time, technological advancements have made more flexible designs possible today.

Differences from printing

Fade-resistant

With printing, ink is applied to the surface of the fabric, so the colors gradually fade with repeated washing.
With jacquard weaving, the threads themselves are colored, so the pattern does not "peel off." A characteristic feature is that the design tends to remain intact even after long-term use.

Reversible

This might be the most interesting feature of jacquard weaving.
When threads used on the front pass to the back, designs with different color schemes are naturally created on the front and back.

Two looks in one. Just by flipping it over, the atmosphere changes completely.
This is something that cannot be achieved with printing.

Three-dimensional texture

The intersection of threads creates a natural unevenness, so the tactile sensation is different from printed fabrics.
Some describe it as having a depth of touch.

Jacquard Weaving × Blanket

Using jacquard weaving techniques to weave art-like designs into blankets.
This is what an art blanket is.

When 100% cotton yarn is finished with jacquard weaving, these characteristics emerge:

  • Designs are part of the fabric structure, making them fade-resistant.
  • All designs are reversible, offering two looks in one.
  • The breathability of cotton coexists with the three-dimensional quality of weaving.
  • Machine washable, becoming softer with each use.

At iMPeRF, we express all 29 designs through jacquard weaving, from organic flows like abstract paintings to line art and street art, and scenery inspired by photographs.

A new form of art made possible by weaving

Jacquard weaving is a technology that originated over 200 years ago.
However, its potential continues to expand.

Instead of printing on fabric, we weave with threads.
That's why the touch is different. The look when flipped over is different. The colors remain vibrant over time.

The "beauty of imperfection" that iMPeRF values.
The subtle variations and textures of jacquard weaving seem to resonate with this philosophy.

It doesn't have to be perfect.
The subtle variations and warmth residing within the weave.

All 29 designs are 100% cotton jacquard woven.
Why not experience the world of art created by weaving in your daily life?
